Peek a boo

Here’s a quick picture of Ashlynn in her first Haloween costume. We can’t believe it’s already been three months since she was born and the time is flying by.

I’m very much enjoying my paternity leave and can’t get over how quickly our little one is changing, growing and discovering new things about the world. There are some new pictures available in the photo gallery if you’re interested.

Implicit Association Test

Posted on Sunday 9 April 2006

I’ve been reading Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink and thought this was pretty interesting. They’re called Implicit Association Tests (IAT).

I took the Disabled Persons-Abled Persons IAT and am told that, “Your data suggest a strong automatic preference for Abled Persons compared to Disabled Persons.”

Yikes. What the tests do is pair concepts like gender, race or ability with things like good and bad and measure’s the speed with which you are able to associate various symbols with these concepts. The tests are designed to get at the subconscious associations we have beetween various concepts and, for me, the results are an indication that I was able to more quickly answer questions when “ability” and “good” were paired up than I was when “disability” and “good” were paired.

As for the results, it’s interesting to think about what’s happening at the subconscious level here. Would the results be different if I had a disability myself? How different would they have been if I had taken this before I began working with individuals who have disabilities on a regular basis?

If you’ve got a few minutes to spare, I’d recommend giving one of these tests a shot. If nothing else, it’s good food for thought.

Back Online

Posted on Sunday 2 April 2006

After an extended hiatus, I’ve finally got this blog back up and running. Guess that’s what I get for setting up a server and not upgrading for 3 years…

Anyway, lots of work to do yet (like get the photos and forums back up and running) and fix the photo and contrast on this theme I just installed, but it’s a start.
